Sauna health benefits: what the research actually shows
The sauna literature is genuinely encouraging and routinely oversold. What the Finnish cohorts found, what reviews conclude, and what none of it proves.

Sauna marketing quotes science the way holiday brochures quote weather statistics: selectively, and always in the buyer's favour. The underlying research is more interesting than the gloss, genuinely encouraging in places, and specific about what it does not show. This is the evidence as it stands, stated plainly enough to repeat at dinner without a cardiologist wincing.
The study everything cites
The anchor of the field is a Finnish cohort published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015: 2,315 middle-aged men from eastern Finland, followed for over 20 years. Men using a sauna 4 to 7 times a week had substantially lower rates of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, fatal cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality than once-a-week users, and longer sessions tracked better than short ones.
Two caveats belong next to it every time it is quoted. It is observational, so it shows association rather than cause, and men who sauna most may differ in ways statistics cannot fully strip out. And it studied hot Finnish saunas, 80°C and up, used frequently, so it does not automatically transfer to other heats or habits.
What the wider evidence adds
A 2018 review in Mayo Clinic Proceedings by the same research group gathered the broader record: beyond the cardiovascular findings, frequent sauna bathing shows associations with lower blood pressure, reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease in cohort data, fewer respiratory infections, and improvements in markers of vascular function. The review's own framing is careful, emerging evidence, associations, mechanisms plausible but not settled, and that framing is the honest one to borrow.

Mechanism is where the story hangs together. Sitting in heat raises core temperature, pushes heart rate toward brisk-walk territory, and dilates blood vessels, a cardiovascular load with a family resemblance to moderate exercise. A 2025 narrative review of sauna in ischemic heart disease collects the physiological threads: better endothelial function, autonomic balance and anti-inflammatory activity in heat-exposed patients. Plausible machinery, still short of causal proof.
Where infrared stands
The cohort data above is traditional-sauna data, because Finland does not do panel cabins. Infrared's own literature is younger: smaller trials, mostly in heart function, chronic pain and fatigue, with encouraging but preliminary results. Since both heats raise core temperature and heart rate, the shared mechanism argues the benefits overlap, and how the two heats differ matters less physiologically than the marketing of either camp suggests. What infrared certainly changes is adherence: 40 gentle minutes at 42p is a habit people keep, and frequency is the variable every dataset rewards.
What none of this proves
No sauna treats, cures or prevents disease, and the detox framing in particular has no meaningful evidence behind it: sweat is a cooling system, and the liver and kidneys were already doing the filtering. The literature supports a milder claim that happens to be enough, that regular heat bathing is associated with better cardiovascular outcomes and is pleasant in ways that make people keep doing it. Buy a sauna as a habit you will enjoy, and let any health upside arrive as a bonus.
Using the heat sensibly
- Work up to 10–20 minute rounds at traditional temperatures, or 30–45 minutes in panel heat, and get out when comfort does
- Drink water before and after; heat plus dehydration is where dizziness comes from
- Leave alcohol out of the cabin entirely
- Pregnant bathers and anyone managing heart disease or blood pressure medication should ask a GP before starting
- Cool down between rounds; the contrast is part of the practice, not a stunt
For buyers, the practical translation of the whole literature is unglamorous: pick the heat you will use often, from the outdoor cabins for the full ritual to garden panel cabins for the nightly habit, and let the buying decisions be about seats, timber and delivered cost rather than promises. The research rewards showing up, not spending up.
