Infrared vs traditional sauna: the differences that decide it

Buyers who regret their sauna almost never bought a bad one; they bought the wrong heat. Traditional and infrared cabins share a word and almost nothing else, from wiring to what a session feels like, and the £2,000 to £6,000 in play deserves the differences laid out straight. Here they are, one decision at a time.

How each one actually makes heat

A traditional stove heats a mass of stones, the stones heat the air to 80–100°C, and you sit in that air until sweat does its work. Water thrown on the stones flashes to steam, and that löyly wave is the sensory centre of the whole tradition. Verdict: this is the sauna of saunas, and nothing panel-based imitates it.

Infrared panels emit radiation your skin absorbs directly, so your body warms while the air stays at a temperature you could read a book in. The cabin is ready in 10 to 15 minutes and draws hundreds of watts rather than kilowatts. Verdict: it is not a cooler version of the same thing, it is a different instrument, and judged as one it is excellent at its own job.

Installation: a circuit against a socket

Every traditional electric stove hard-wires to a dedicated circuit, 32A at 6kW, run from the consumer unit as notifiable work under Part P by a registered electrician, at £300 to £800. Wood fire trades the circuit for a flue and tending. An indoor infrared cabin plugs into the wall and is assembled in minutes, which is why it is the only sauna type that suits a rental. Verdict: infrared wins installation outright, and it is not close.

Running cost: 42p against £1.57

A 6kW stove uses about 6 units across a heat-up and an hour's use; a 1600W panel cabin uses about 1.6 units in a full session. At three sessions a week that is roughly £245 a year against £66, and the £179 gap compounds for nightly users. Verdict: infrared, by a factor of four, and the gap widens outdoors in winter where stove cabins fight the wind.

What the evidence says about each

The long-run cohort research behind sauna health claims, including a 20-year JAMA Internal Medicine study of 2,315 Finnish men, was conducted in hot traditional saunas, and the wider evidence for heat bathing is strongest there simply because that is where the data is. Infrared's own trial literature is younger and smaller, pointing at heart function, chronic pain and fatigue. Both heats raise core temperature and heart rate, the shared mechanism researchers credit. Verdict: traditional holds the deeper evidence base; neither has a clinical crown.

Outdoors changes the answer

In the garden the gap narrows. Panel heat outdoors needs a weatherised shell and hardwired supply, so outdoor infrared cabins start at £3,171 and lose the plug-in advantage, while complete stove cabins on the main outdoor ranking start at £1,999 with the heater included. Indoors the positions reverse: a spare room takes a plug-in infrared cabin from £1,500 with no building work at all, while a traditional cabin still wants its circuit. Verdict: outdoors leans traditional, indoors leans infrared, and budget decides the exceptions.

  • Buy traditional for the löyly ritual, shared 90°C sessions, and the garden cabin as a destination
  • Buy infrared for nightly 40-minute decompression, running cost in pennies, rentals and spare rooms
  • Buy both heats in one building only if the household is genuinely split; hybrid cabins exist at £5,569 with two circuits
  • Buy neither on health claims alone: frequency of use is the variable the research rewards

Is infrared as good as a real sauna?

It is a different instrument doing a different job. It matches the parts people measure, sweat, heart-rate rise, relaxation, at lower temperatures and cost, and it cannot reproduce löyly or the 90°C hit.
